A Greek Island a Day Keeps Boredom at Bay
We’re all familiar with the worrying concerns of the Greek economy; its gaping public debt and the inability of European politicians to bring the country back from the brink of despair.
But without wanting to sound flippant, we are also all familiar with the stunning Greek islands – easily one of the best cruising grounds in the Northern Hemisphere for luxury yacht charter. And what the economy – with a deficit of more than €300 billion – really needs is an excellent summer this year to help recovery. Fortunately for Greece, its financial woes have done little to dent the country’s tourism industry which includes a buoyant yacht charter industry. The government is hoping to that the number of foreign visitors – which include a large number of clients on board luxury charter yachts – reaches a record high of 16.5 million. So if you are considering a yacht charter in the Greek islands this year, here is our five-point guide.
1. Of all the 1400-plus islands which come under the umbrella of the ‘Greek islands’, arguably the best place to party is on the island of Mykonos.
2. For those on luxury yacht charter seeking natural beauty at its finest, try Santorini for its stunning now-extinct volcano. Make sure you visit the town of Fira which sits on the top of the volcanoes rim, for one of the best views in the whole of Greece.
3. Greece’s largest island Crete easily boasts some of the best beaches anywhere in the country – in particular Balos, Falassarma and Elafonissi, all within a short sail.
4. If you are keen to sail on your luxury yacht charter into the best neoclassical harbour, make sure you go as far as Symi, just beyond Rhodes, on your travels.
5. To get away from the crowds on yacht charter call in at Farmakonisi, one of Greece’s uninhabited islands. Fascinatingly a young Julius Caesar was held hostage here for 38 days by pirates, he was freed once his ransom had been paid but returned soon after with a fleet, captured and crucified all his captors.
