A Bucket List for Charterers: Grenada
Exotic destinations are par for the course for luxury yacht charters, and perhaps one of the highest on the list is the spectacular ‘Island of Spice’ in the southeast Caribbean Sea, otherwise known as Grenada. With the smaller islands which make up the Grenadines, Grenada is just 12 degrees north of the equator, but its tropical climate is tempered by steady cooling trade winds. The Grenadines offer those on a Caribbean yacht charter in the region a wealth of sheltered anchorages, year round good weather, fantastic waters for sailing and diving, and a host of things to see and do.
The islands are of volcanic origin and a number of small rivers with beautiful waterfalls flow into the sea from the green canopied mountains, where there is also one of the most striking mountain crater lakes ever seen. The main island of Grenada is covered with fragrant spice trees, hence its nickname. There is nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cinnamon, as well as cocoa and rare tropical flowers. The coastline is peppered with stunning white sandy beaches, like the world famous two-mile long Grand Anse beach, stretching snugly in the curved bay where the Annual Grenada Sailing Festival takes place. For luxury yacht charters, Grenada is a perfect base to explore the lively capital, St George, with its colourful historic buildings and horseshoe shaped harbour, as well as the smaller islands, Carriacou, a hilly island popular for walking, and Petit Martinique, which is the tip of a volcano peeping above the water. Other world famous attractions include the Tobago Cays Marine Park, a national park and wildlife reserve, containing protected habitats including lagoons, coral reefs, and sea turtle nesting sites, and the rich worlds below the ocean surface. Grenada has been dubbed the ‘Wreck Diving Capital of the Eastern Caribbean’, and is the site of an eerily beautiful underwater sculpture park which is listed by National Geographic magazine as one of the Top 25 Wonders of the World. It is easy to understand why sailors return to this spectacular world class region year after year for Caribbean yacht charters or even when looking for a luxury yacht broker, as few could tire of the variety of the scenery and the outstanding range of activities on and off the water.
