Sample Itinerary

Day

1

Start in Juneau with a helicopter trip to the Mendenhall Glacier. Situated some 12 miles from downtown Juneau, the glacier extends for 12 miles flowing from the 1,500 sqaure mile Juneau Ice Field. The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Centre is located close to the glacier's terminus. Leave Juneau and steam for Saginaw Channel, for excellent whale watching.

Day

2

Steam across the icy straits to Tenakee inlet where you’ll find Tenakee springs. Sited on Chicagoff Island, in the middle of the Tongass National Forest, Tenakee is a remote village, with no cars or roads. Here you can enjoy the natural hot springs before taking a stroll through the charming village and visiting its delightful coffee shop and gift shop.

Day

3

Steam through the peril straits for Sitka, a town rich in Russian history and native Tlingit culture. Sitka is well known for its flora and fauna and is a popular destination for hiking with many companies offering organised tours. You will also find great clamming nearby and possibly halibut, ling, cod or salmon fishing around the entrance of Salisbury Sound.

Day

4

Close to Sitka, at the mouth of the Indian River, you will find the Sitka National Historic Park, which is famed for its collection of native totem poles and in 1804 was the site of the Battle of Sitka, a armed conflict between the indigenous Tlingit and Russian fur-traders.

Day

5

Steam out into Chatham Strait and head for Baranof Island where you can enjoy a bath in a natural hot pool situated adjacent to a roaring waterfall. Head down the 150-mile long Chatham Strait to Red Bluff where it is possible to view humpback and killer whales.

Day

6

Enter Frederick Sound, which in summer is a great destination for watching whales. The sound provides a passageway between Kupreanof Island, to the south, and Admiralty Island, where you can take the tender for some halibut fishing. In the afternoon, go hiking ashore and visit the nearby sea lion colony.

Day

7

Cruise to Tracy Arm, where you can take an incredible trip through a granite-walled fjord to observe the Sawyer Glacier. Tracy Arm provides one of the highlights of any Alaska yacht charter and you may see all kinds of wildlife including eagles, seals and perhaps even brown bears, mountain goats and moose.

Day

8

Leave for St Petersburg, which is located at the northern end of Mitkof Island, where the Wrangell Narrows meet Frederick Sound. Often referred to as 'Little Norway', St Petersburg is an exceptionally prosperous fishing community founded by Norwegian settlers in the 1890's. It is a town that is rich in tradition and is a great destination for fishing King Salmon.

Day

9

On the penultimate day of your Alaska yacht charter adventure, cruise from St Petersburg to the nearby LeConcte Clacier. The 21 mile glacier has retreated almost 2.5 miles since its discovery and is known for it's 'shooter' ice bergs, which calve off the submerged lower part of the glacier and 'shoot' up towards the surface.

Day

10

Cruise to nearby Anan Creek, where a significant pink salmon run attracts all manner of wildlife including brown and black bears, bald eagles, sea lions and seals. The Anan Observatory provides a great viewing platform for the creek and its adjacent waterfall and is a wonderful place to view Alaskan Grizzlies in their natural habitat. Following your visit to the creek, steam toward Myers Chuck and onwards to your disembarkation point.

Please note that some Alaskan yacht charters may not begin and end in the state due to legal restrictions. Ask your charter yacht broker for further details.
